Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa has a great history of conquest and struggle and is rightly the third element of the Cultural Triangle. There is a Lankathilaka temple and a huge statue of Buddha made of stone.

Relics worth seeing include the Millennium Royal Palace, the Royal Throne Room with ornately carved stone walls, the swimming pool, the Sacred Quadrangle, a high cairn surrounded by stone walls, entirely made of stone, Pabaly Vehera (Dagaba, the third largest for the site), Rankot Vihara (Polonnaruwa) The largest Dagaba in the country and the fourth largest Dagaba in the country at 54 m), Dagaba Kiri Vihara (unrestored milky Dagaba still in good condition), 17 m high walls and a giant headless Buddha, Gal Vihara, Thivanka Lankatilaka Viharaya with 4 different Buddha statues at Image House and Potgul Vihara (Ancient Library). There is more to discover than antiquity. To the west of the ancient city is the artificial lake Parakrama Samudra, which looks like an inland sea. Built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 1950s. The Polonnaruwa Museum provides much-needed insight into the ruins of Polonnaruwa. Minneriya/Caudula National Park is a short drive from the city.
